Transmissions

Transmission ServiceYour transmission takes the energy created by your engine and transmits it to your drive train which turns the wheels and makes your car go. We change gears so we can go faster and slower, up and down hills, forward and reverse. Your tansmission is a major part of your car and can be a major expense. If you are hearing strange noises or having problems with jerky movement, bring your car in and let our experts tell you the best way to fix these problems.

Manual Transmissions and Clutch

Problem Possible Cause Remedy/Repair
Excessive clutch noise
  1. A bad clutch shaft pilot bearing will make a high pitched squeal when the clutch is disengaged and the transmission is in gear or within the first 2" of pedal travel.
  2. Noise from the clutch linkage is a clicking or snapping that can be heard or felt as the pedal is moved completely up or down.
  3. Transmitted engine noises are amplified by the clutch housing and heard in the passenger compartment. They are usually the result of insufficient pedal free-play.
  1. The bearing must be replaced.
  2. This usually requires lubrication.
  3. Manipulating the clutch pedal.
Clutch slips (the car does not move as it should when the clutch is engaged)
  1. A worn pressure plate or clutch plate
  2. Oil soaked clutch plate
  3. Insufficient pedal free-play
  4. Bad waste or slave cylinder
  5. Low fluid
  1. Replace prssure plate or clutch plate.
  2. Clean/replace clutch plate
  3. Adjust petal
  4. Replace slave cylinder
  5. Add Fluid
Clutch drags or fails to release
  1. Too light transmission lubricant or low lubricant level
  2. Improperly adjusted clutch linkage
  3. Bad cylinder
  4. Low fluid
  5. Air in line
  1. Check/replace lubricant
  2. Adjust linkage
  3. Replace cylindar
  4. Add fluid
  5. Bled lines
Low clutch life
  1. Low clutch life is usually a result of poor driving habits or heavy-duty use. Riding the clutch, pulling heavy loads, holding the car on a grade with the clutch instead of the brakes and rapid clutch engagement all contribute to low clutch life.
  1. Replace Clutch
Transmission shifts hard
  1. Improper lubricant viscosity or lubricant level.
  2. Clutch linkage needs adjustment/ lubrication.
  1. Check/Replace lubricant
  2. Adjust/lubricate clutch linkage.
Transmission leaks lubricant
  1. Lubricant level too high
  2. Cracks in the transmission case
  3. Loose or missing bolts
